Oakway SD60

Something about EMD's 60 Series power has always fascinated me. I'm not sure exactly what, but no matter which ones, SD and/or GP, M, I or standard cabs, even MACs, I love 'em all.

So, after I built the BN ph. 2 SD60M, I figured that I'd need a running partner for it, about the same time that P2K released their SD60.

It's almost complete (like a few of my other locos). Still left are the headlights, ditchlights and brake chain. A decoder is on the way, so I'll install the lighting when I install the decoder.

Please excuse the quality of these pics - I'm still learning.

9077 - left side

Fireman's side of #9077.

left front

Left front view showing some truck and underframe detail. The mirrors were scratchbuilt

right rear

Right rear view. Of note, the Microscale decals used for the EMD grachics must have been too large, so I trimmed them down to size and created new borders from black stripes. The trust plate was taken from the Microscale BNSF "vommit bonnet" set.

left rear

Left rear view.

top down

Top down shot showing hollowed exhaust, reworked winterization hatch (P2K hatch with DA grill) and plenty of diesel soot.

left front, again

Left side of cab and more truck/tank detail. Traction control sensor was made from a DA speed recorder with a scratchbuilt center hub. Those P2K see thru dynamic screens are just too cool...

right side truck/tank

Right side view of some front truck/fuel tank detail. Sander lines are bent from brass wire and held in place with DA eye bolts. Also used were DW air filter and fuel filler, DA sight glass and dial gauge. The "Y" filler pipe was scratchbuilt from brass wire and caps are from the DA fuel tank details set.

top down at rear

Top of the rear end of the unit showing the modified winterization hatch, as well as an attempt at fading the fans. On the prototype photos that I've seen there was fair bit of primer as well as a significant ammount of heat/exhaust/soot coloration evident. Perfect excuse to weather a little more.

front

One of the things that appealed to me about #9077 was the repair on the nose. The prototype had this cool looking primered spot that was screaming to be modeled. The faded "GM" logo (evident on every Oakway nowadays) was created by gently erasing using (duh...) a couple of erasors; a pink pearl and a white drafting erasor.

I've got a pile of RPP shell/chassis kits for more SD and GP60s. On top of that, P2K is releasing a GP60. Coupled to that, I'vr mapped out in detail how I'm going to build an SD60MAC. AND, I really would like to create EMD 3 - radial trucks and all. I should be wrapped up in 60s for some time...
